Existed “The economic viability of the present is sustained by debt, that is, by future income claimed, consumed, or spent in the present…in short, the present feels as if it is constituted by emptying out the future to sustain a looping version of a past that never existed”. – Hito Steyerl. This work - a collaboration between myself and Italian artist duo Eccoci Kitchen - uses food as a vehicle to explore and imagine alternative economies and value systems. Part installation, part workshop: four courses are served which allow visitors to eat, explore and talk about food in relation to cultural, personal, nutritional and experiential value. Food is served on a set of algorithmically generated plates, which take phrases used by financial traders in order to predict future trends in the stock market as their starting point. Does our economy rests on a set of fictions and fabrications? Can we imagine alternative value systems other than financial ones? Are there other principles or standards of behaviour that we consider important for life? Participants are encouraged to explore these questions through a series of interactions. Starting with three things we value in our lives, and three morals or values that we admire in ourselves and others, participants are asked to imagine what an economy or society based on these objects, values and morals might look like. How might we measure an economy that is based on our sense of touch for example? What might an economy based on the sun look like? What shape would it take? Participants are encouraged to respond to the exercisers by writing and drawing on the tablecloth, serving as a document of communal ideas and outcomes from the workshop. The work aims to defend the intrinsic value of knowledge and human exchange - a playful engagement with food and a space for us to come together, share perspectives and imagine our futures into on the plates: These images have been produced by a Generative adversarial network. (GANs) are algorithmic architectures that use two neural networks, (a generator and a discriminator) pitting one against the other in order to generate new, synthetic instances of data that can pass as real. They are used widely in image recognition, generation and are the algorithms used in the creation of “deep fakes”. I have created these images using a text-to-image GAN. Through this process, I am able to generate images from words. I have been feeding this particular GAN the names of various stock-market patterns used by traders in order to predict future trends in the financial market, as well as phrases taken from various internet forums for day traders (amateur home traders) on how to become profitable on the stock market. The GAN then produces an image, which it thinks, accurately represents these words. The patterns and phrases are printed underneath each image, with an aim to create a satirical and fabricated visual encyclopaedia of trading techniques and patterns. The images created are based on a database of images taken at random from the internet, from which the algorithm is trained. These images are therefore fabrications of reality, based on real images, that the algorithm is attempting to present as real. Human ExploitationIn 1996, the US Department of Defence released declassified excerpts of a manual entitled, The Human Resource Exploitation Training Manual. The manual had been a standard textbook for students at the US Army School of the Americas (SOA); an American military training academy set up in Panama in 1946, which trained Latin American soldiers using techniques that were compatible with United States military customs and traditions. The manual is specifically concerned with interrogation techniques, and advocates the use of fear, beatings, false imprisonment and executions. More than 60,000 Latin American soldiers have been trained at the School of the Americas, and in all, 11 dictators have attended its courses – among them, some of the region's most notorious human rights abusers including dictators and death-squad leaders. Despite a truly shocking list of human rights abusing alumni, US army officials identify these men as “a few bad apples”, and the school still exists today. This military training manual is an institutional record: part of an archive, one generated by the actions and processes of the implementation of power, the bureaucracy of warfare. Archives are time and space bound, perpetually connected to events in the past, yet they are also often carried forward into new circumstances where they are re-presented and used - evoking Hal Foster’s description of the archive as a place of creation: “a move to turn excavation sites into construction sites.” Here, the manual is deconstructed and re-presented with fresh meaning. Pasted over its pages are photographs from the University of Milwaukee Photography Archive – taken by two early to mid 20th century American geographers: Isaiah Bowman, and Eugene Vernon Harris. Bowman and Harris were using photography to chart, map and document Latin America on behalf of the American Geographical Society, and the US Foreign Service respectively, shortly before the formation of the school. Bowman and Harris’ images are also presented in edited form and paired with extracts of text from the manual. This editing process can be associated with the “performance” that archivists enact on the archive. I was invited to participate in the project by Mexican photographer Mauricio Palos, and Argentinian photographer Zahara Gomez. The work has been made possible by the generous cooperation of the University of Milwaukee Photography Archive, where the photographs of Isaiah Bowman and Eugene Vernon Harris are housed. A Study of Assassination In 1997, the CIA declassified a document titled A Study of Assassination, believed to have been written in 1953 as part of a covert U.S. operation to overthrow Guatemala’s democratically elected president, Jacobo Árbenz Guzmán. The coup, orchestrated by the CIA and backed by United Fruit Company—then the region’s dominant corporate power—was framed as an anti-communist intervention but ultimately secured American economic interests. The coup’s legacy was catastrophic: 31 years of military rule, over 100,000 deaths, and the deepening of corporate imperialism in Central America. At the heart of this project is an interrogation of how covert operations, state-sanctioned violence, and propaganda shape historical memory. The work engages directly with A Study of Assassination, a manual designed to “educate” CIA-trained mercenaries in the act of killing—though its absurd detachment from reality led some to dismiss it as a joke. The project recontextualizes the manual through photomontage, juxtaposing its clinical instructions with archival press images, United Fruit advertising campaigns, and Cold War propaganda. Through this, it examines the visual and linguistic strategies used to justify imperial violence, while highlighting the cultural absurdities embedded within them. A second component of the project explores the tension between fact and fiction by translating the assassination manual into staged photographic sequences. Blurring documentary and performance, these images literalize the manual’s instructions, questioning the extent to which history is shaped not only by events themselves but by the narratives constructed around them. This work extends my ongoing artistic inquiry into how dominant histories are constructed, manipulated, and mediated through imagery. By exposing the aesthetic strategies of power—through montage, archival intervention, and subversion of context—it interrogates the mechanisms that obscure historical violence, while considering how Vault 7 On Tuesday the 7th of March 2017, wikileaks released “Vault 7” - the largest ever publication of confidential documents on the CIA.The leak comprised of 8,761 documents and files from an isolated, high-security network situated inside the CIA’s Centre for Cyber Intelligence. This extraordinary collection, which amounts to more than several hundred million lines of code, gives its possessor the entire hacking capacity of the CIA. The documents reveal how the CIA has gained political and budgetary pre-eminence over the US National Security Agency (NSA), and found itself building not just its now infamous drone fleet, but a very different type of covert, globe-spanning force – its own substantial fleet of hackers. By the end of 2016, the Centre of Cyber Intelligence had over 5000 registered users and had produced more than a thousand hacking systems, “trojans”, viruses, and other “weaponized” malware. Such is the scale of the CIA’s undertaking that by the same year, its hackers had utilized more code than that used to run Facebook. The CIA had created, in effect, its “own NSA” with even less accountability and without publicly answering the question as to whether such a massive budgetary spend on duplicating the capacities of a rival agency could be justified. Wikileaks claim that the source of the leaks provided an accompanying statement with questions that they say urgently need to be debated publicly, including whether the CIA’s hacking capabilities exceed its mandated powers and the problem of public oversight of the agency. But these documents also reveal something else, something perhaps even more interesting than the cyber capabilities of the CIA – they provide a telling insight into the culture among the agency, of the normality and ordinariness of the people that work and operate there. They reveal an almost absurd level of banality, a culture so far flung from our Hollywood influenced; idealised perceptions of what it is to be a “spy”. So much is the case, that at points, in reading through the documents I even began to question their authenticity. On the first page we are presented with a picture of Will Ferrell’s comedian character from a popular Hollywood movie – a movie from which, in fact, this particular weaponized malware, is named after. Through this project, I aim not only to present and play on this banal absurdity, but also to challenge our conceptions of how such an organisation is run, and to question it’s integrity. I wonder if a culture has been created at the cyber division in which employees are so far removed from the consequence of their work, that it somehow doesn’t seem real, like some kind of game, where weaponized malwares are named after popular sci-fi characters. He is a graduate of MA Photojournalism &amp; Documentary Photography, at the London College of Communication (LCC). In 2017, George was awarded the Paris Photo Carte Blanche Student Award, whilst still completing his Masters degree in London. In 2019 he was selected as a Parallel Photo Platform 3rd cycle artist. He has since been exhibited in Germany; France; Italy; Spain; Poland; Ukraine, Portugal, Hungary, the Netherlands; the U.S and the UK. His work has been published in Dazed, PHMuseum, Wallpaper, Huck, The British Journal of Photography, Artpress and Fisheye Magazine, among others. George is a co-founder of the Carte Blanche Collective.
